India opened their three-match T20I series against Afghanistan with a commanding seven-wicket victory, powered by an explosive half-century from Abhishek Sharma and an incisive spell from Arshdeep Singh. The hosts chased down Afghanistan’s 156-run target with 38 balls to spare, taking a 1-0 lead in the series.
After winning the toss and opting to bowl, India made early inroads through Arshdeep, who struck three times to finish with figures of 3/19. His disciplined bowling prevented Afghanistan from building sustained momentum during the middle overs and kept the visitors from posting a more imposing total.
Afghanistan managed to reach 156/8 from their 20 overs, with their batters finding it difficult to maintain a consistent scoring rate against India’s bowling attack. Arshdeep’s breakthroughs at crucial stages ensured that Afghanistan were unable to accelerate significantly towards the end of their innings.
India’s response was dominated by Abhishek, who produced a blistering display of power hitting at the top of the order. The left-hander brought up his half-century from just 22 deliveries, setting the tone for a chase that quickly moved in India’s favour.
Abhishek continued attacking the Afghanistan bowlers after reaching his fifty and eventually smashed 82 runs from only 32 balls. His innings combined aggressive strokeplay with a remarkable scoring rate and gave India a huge advantage inside the Powerplay.
With Abhishek taking the attack to the opposition, India quickly moved ahead of the required run rate. The early onslaught also reduced the pressure on the rest of the batting line-up, allowing India to maintain control throughout the chase.
India eventually reached 157/3 in 13.4 overs, completing the chase with more than six overs remaining. The result underlined the difference between the two sides on the night, with India’s bowlers restricting Afghanistan to a modest total before their top order dismantled the target.
Arshdeep’s three-wicket haul and Abhishek’s extraordinary 82 formed the defining contributions of the match. The performance also gave India a strong start to the series and provided the team with considerable confidence ahead of the second T20I. Afghanistan will now look to regroup quickly and address their batting shortcomings before the next game, while India will aim to maintain their momentum and seal the series in the second match.
