WhatsApp introduces four new group chat features, including permanent pinned messages

WhatsApp has announced four new features for group chats, aiming to make conversations easier to manage and help users keep track of important messages. The latest update introduces permanent message pinning, expanded chat history sharing, group-specific status updates and a new filter for unread mentions and replies.
The first feature allows users to pin messages indefinitely without setting an expiry date. Previously, WhatsApp required users to select a specific duration for pinned messages. The new option will help groups keep important information, such as event details, announcements and group rules, easily accessible.
The second update expands the platform’s chat history sharing facility. Users can now share recent messages with someone even after they have joined a group. This can be done by tapping the person’s name in the group conversation and selecting the option to share recent messages. WhatsApp has confirmed that these messages will remain protected by end-to-end encryption.
The third feature, called Group Status, allows users to share status updates with members of a particular group instead of their entire contact list. Other group members can view, react to and post their own updates. Like regular WhatsApp Status posts, these updates will automatically disappear after 24 hours.
The fourth addition is a new mentions and replies filter designed to help users identify conversations requiring their attention. It will display unread group chats in which users have been directly mentioned or received replies. The filter will also include messages containing the @all mention, making it easier to locate important conversations without scrolling through numerous unread messages.
The new features address common challenges associated with busy group conversations, particularly in family, workplace, educational and social groups. By improving message organisation, information sharing and notification management, Meta-owned WhatsApp aims to make group communication more convenient and efficient.
