According to a decree signed by President Vladimir Putin on September 26, former US security contractor Edward Snowden has been given Russian citizenship.
One of the 75 foreign nationals whose citizenship has been given by the decree is Snowden. The regulation was made public on a website run by the government.
Former US National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden has been residing in Russia since 2013 in order to avoid prosecution in his home country for disclosing secret papers describing secret government surveillance initiatives.
He claimed at the time that he intended to seek Russian citizenship without renunciation of his US citizenship when he was awarded the permanent status in 2020.
