Torrential rain and flash floods have wreaked havoc across Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, leaving thousands of people stranded, damaging critical infrastructure and disrupting transportation across the northeastern states. According to officials, more than 22,000 people have been affected in Assam alone as relentless rainfall continues to swell rivers and inundate low-lying areas.
The worst-affected district in Assam is Dhemaji, where overflowing rivers submerged villages, roads and agricultural land. A major setback to connectivity came after a railway bridge over the Simen River partially collapsed due to erosion caused by the strong water current. The incident forced railway authorities to suspend train services on the affected route as engineers assessed the extent of the damage and initiated restoration work.
Floodwaters entered several residential areas, prompting district authorities to shift affected families to relief camps. Rescue teams have been deployed to evacuate stranded residents and provide food, drinking water and other essential supplies. Officials are closely monitoring river levels as heavy rainfall persists across the region.
Neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh has also witnessed widespread destruction from flash floods and landslides. Roads, bridges and public infrastructure have suffered extensive damage, severely disrupting connectivity in several districts. Rescue operations involving the Indian Air Force (IAF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local administration are underway to reach isolated villages and evacuate residents trapped by floodwaters and landslides.
Authorities said at least three people have lost their lives in flood-related incidents in Arunachal Pradesh, while search operations are continuing for those reported missing. Relief materials are being transported to affected areas despite challenging weather conditions and damaged road networks.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the flood situation with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and assured the state government of full support from the Centre. The Assam government has intensified relief and rescue measures, with district administrations coordinating efforts to provide shelter, medical assistance and emergency supplies to displaced families.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has forecast more heavy rainfall across parts of the Northeast over the coming days, raising concerns about additional flooding and landslides. Authorities have urged residents living in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant, follow official advisories and cooperate with evacuation efforts as emergency agencies continue rescue and relief operations across the flood-hit region.
