Apple, Microsoft Raise Product Prices as AI-Driven Chip Costs Surge

News Mania Desks/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 27th June 2026

Apple and Microsoft have increased prices for several of their products as soaring memory chip costs, fuelled by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI), continue to put pressure on the global technology industry. The price hikes reflect growing concerns among major electronics manufacturers over rising component costs and tightening supplies of critical memory chips.

The increase is primarily linked to a sharp rise in the prices of DRAM and NAND flash memory chips, which are essential components used in smartphones, laptops, tablets, personal computers and data centres. Demand for these chips has surged as technology companies race to expand AI infrastructure, build advanced data centres and develop generative AI applications, creating intense competition for semiconductor supplies.

Industry analysts say the AI boom has significantly shifted the balance of the semiconductor market, with manufacturers prioritising high-performance memory chips for AI servers over components used in consumer electronics. This has reduced the availability of memory chips for traditional devices and driven up production costs for companies such as Apple and Microsoft.

The higher manufacturing expenses are now being passed on to consumers through increased retail prices for selected products. While neither company has attributed the price adjustments to a single factor, analysts believe the surge in chip costs has become one of the primary reasons behind the latest revisions.

Market experts expect other global electronics manufacturers to follow a similar path if memory prices continue to climb. Companies producing smartphones, laptops and other consumer electronics could face mounting cost pressures unless semiconductor production increases enough to meet the growing demand from AI-related industries. Analysts caution that unless memory chip production expands substantially in the coming months, consumers may face further price increases on a wide range of electronic devices.
