Delhi is set to host a three-match T20I series between Afghanistan and India in September, with all the games scheduled to take place at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. The series will be played from September 13 to 17 as part of Afghanistan’s Future Tours Programme.
The opening T20I will be played on September 13, followed by the second match on September 15 and the series finale on September 17. The three fixtures will give cricket fans in the national capital an opportunity to watch the two sides compete in the shortest international format.
The upcoming contest will be the first bilateral T20I series between Afghanistan and India since January 2024. The teams have continued to meet across formats, maintaining a growing cricketing relationship. Their most recent bilateral engagement came during Afghanistan’s three-match ODI tour of India in June this year, with India completing a 3-0 series sweep.
Afghanistan has increasingly used India as a venue for its home fixtures, and the latest series reflects the continued cooperation between the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
ACB chairman Mirwais Ashraf described the series as an important development for Afghanistan cricket. He said hosting India for a bilateral contest in India represented a significant milestone and expressed appreciation for the BCCI’s support. He also highlighted the opportunity to further strengthen the relationship between the two cricket boards.
The series comes at a busy period for both teams. Afghanistan are currently involved in a five-match ODI series against Ireland, while India are preparing to resume their World Test Championship campaign against Sri Lanka. With three T20Is packed into five days, the Delhi series is expected to provide another competitive chapter in the growing cricketing ties between India and Afghanistan.
