West Bengal to Launch ‘Arjuna Force’ on NDRF Model for Disaster Response

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced plans to launch the *‘Arjuna Force’, a specialised disaster response unit modelled on the **National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). The force is expected to begin operations in *September to strengthen disaster management and emergency response across the state.

The Chief Minister said the Arjuna Force in West Bengal will be equipped with modern infrastructure and trained to respond to natural disasters, major accidents and other emergencies.

He said the initiative follows challenges faced during previous disasters, including Cyclone Amphan, when emergency response and road clearance were delayed.

The decision also follows the *Taratala accident, which highlighted the need for specialised emergency teams. Around *20% of positions in the proposed force will be reserved for or given preference to firefighters.

The Arjuna Force is expected to improve West Bengal’s disaster preparedness, rapid response capabilities and emergency management infrastructure.
