Kharagpur Division Intensifies Cleanliness and Sustainability Initiatives under Swachhata Hi Seva 2026

Kharagpur, 21 September 2026:
As part of the ongoing Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2026 campaign, Kharagpur Division of South Eastern Railway intensified cleanliness and sanitation activities across stations, trains, railway offices and other railway premises today, with a focus on ensuring sustainable cleanliness, proper waste management and enhanced awareness among railway staff and passengers.
An intensive cleanliness drive was undertaken at all stations of Kharagpur Division. During the drive, the adequacy and working condition of cleaning machines, tools, plants and other sanitation equipment were reviewed, while special emphasis was laid on ensuring that cleaning staff are provided with and use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for safe and effective cleaning operations.
Arrangements for segregated dry and wet waste bins were reinforced, along with awareness campaigns encouraging passengers and station users to use dustbins properly and maintain cleanliness. A special plastic-free platform drive was also undertaken to promote responsible waste disposal and reduce the use of single-use plastics in railway premises.
Under the “Swachh Railgaadi” initiative, intensive inspections of multiple trains were carried out by teams of officers and supervisors. The inspections covered toilets, coach interiors and exteriors, linen quality and cleanliness of Pantry Cars, particularly in trains covered under the On-Board Housekeeping Services (OBHS).
Special attention was also given to the cleaning of drains and toilets at stations to ensure hygienic and passenger-friendly railway premises. Solar-powered equipment installed at various locations was checked to ensure its proper functioning and continued utilisation.
As part of the campaign’s focus on sustainable and environmentally responsible practices, railway offices were encouraged to follow clean-desk, minimum-print and digital-documentation norms.
Kharagpur Division is undertaking a wide range of activities throughout the Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign, involving railway employees, cleaning staff, NGOs, Self Help Groups, schools and other stakeholders. The campaign seeks to strengthen the culture of cleanliness and responsible waste management while encouraging collective participation in creating cleaner and greener railway premises.
