California Mayor Resigns After Federal Charges Over Alleged Links to Chinese Influence Network

Eileen Wang, the mayor of Arcadia, has resigned after United States federal authorities charged her with acting as an unregistered foreign agent for China. The case has intensified concerns in the United States regarding alleged foreign influence operations targeting local political institutions and community organisations.

Federal prosecutors announced that Wang had agreed to plead guilty to the charge as part of a plea agreement filed in court. According to the US Department of Justice, Wang allegedly worked with associates connected to Chinese government interests between 2020 and 2022 without properly disclosing those activities to American authorities.

Investigators claimed that Wang was linked to a media platform called “U.S. News Center,” which prosecutors described as a propaganda outlet operating in Southern California. Authorities alleged that the platform published material favourable to Beijing while presenting itself as an independent community news source aimed at Chinese-American audiences.

Court documents stated that the platform promoted content supporting Chinese government policies and rejecting criticism related to issues such as human rights concerns in Xinjiang. Prosecutors alleged that some of the material was produced or distributed under the direction of individuals connected to the Chinese government.

The Justice Department said Wang’s actions violated laws requiring individuals representing foreign governments or foreign political interests to register with federal authorities. Officials argued that undisclosed foreign influence operations can threaten democratic institutions and public trust by secretly shaping political narratives and public opinion.

Following the announcement of the charges, Wang resigned from both her position as mayor and her seat on the Arcadia City Council. Local authorities confirmed that the alleged activities occurred before she assumed office as mayor in 2022. City officials also stated that no municipal resources or city decision-making processes were directly involved in the federal investigation.

The case has attracted additional attention because of Wang’s association with Yaoning “Mike” Sun, her former fiancé and political adviser. Sun had previously pleaded guilty in a related case involving allegations of acting as an illegal foreign agent for China. Federal prosecutors said he played a significant role in operating the media platform and was later sentenced to prison.

Investigators also connected the case to businessman John Chen, who had earlier been convicted in another foreign influence-related investigation involving alleged efforts to advance Chinese government interests in the United States. Authorities claimed Wang maintained communication with individuals associated with those activities while distributing pro-Beijing content. Over recent years, US officials have repeatedly warned about attempts by foreign governments to influence political discourse, public opinion and diaspora communities through media organisations, lobbying networks and community groups.

The controversy has sparked renewed debate over national security and transparency requirements for public officials in the United States. Legal experts noted that federal laws require anyone acting on behalf of foreign governments in political or public relations activities to formally register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

Arcadia, located near Los Angeles, is home to a large Asian-American population and is considered one of Southern California’s prominent suburban communities. City leaders said the council would begin procedures to fill the vacant positions created by Wang’s resignation. The federal case is expected to remain under close public and political scrutiny as authorities continue investigations into alleged foreign influence networks operating in the United States.
