Commercial Crude Oil Extraction to Begin in West Bengal’s Ashoknagar in July
News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 2nd July 2026

West Bengal is set to make a significant entry into India’s domestic oil production sector, with commercial crude oil extraction scheduled to begin in July at Ashoknagar in North 24 Parganas district. The project marks a major milestone for the state and is expected to strengthen the country’s efforts to increase indigenous crude oil production and reduce dependence on imports.
The oil field, discovered after extensive geological surveys and exploratory drilling, has been found to contain commercially viable crude oil reserves. Following the successful completion of exploration and testing, the authorities have completed the necessary preparations to commence commercial production. Officials associated with the project said extraction operations are expected to begin this month after the installation of essential infrastructure and production facilities.
The Ashoknagar oil field has been under exploration for several years, with experts conducting seismic studies and test drilling to assess the quantity and quality of the reserves. Encouraging results from these studies paved the way for regulatory approvals and the transition from exploration to commercial production.
State and project officials believe the development will provide a boost to West Bengal’s economy by creating employment opportunities, attracting investment and supporting industrial growth in the region. Local businesses are also expected to benefit from improved infrastructure and increased economic activity associated with the project.
Authorities have stated that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure environmentally responsible extraction. Modern safety systems and monitoring mechanisms have been put in place to minimise environmental impact while maintaining efficient production. The initial phase will focus on stabilising output before considering any future expansion based on production performance.
Residents of Ashoknagar have welcomed the development, expressing optimism that the project will generate new employment opportunities and contribute to regional development. With commercial extraction set to begin in July, the oil field is expected to play an important role in strengthening West Bengal’s presence in India’s energy sector while contributing to the nation’s long-term goal of increasing domestic oil production.
