Iran Announces Closure of Strait of Hormuz Following U.S. Strikes

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/11th June 2026

Iran has declared the closure of the Strait of Hormuz after fresh military strikes by the United States, marking a sharp escalation in tensions in the Middle East and triggering fears of disruption to global energy supplies. Iranian authorities warned that any vessel attempting to pass through the strategically important waterway would be considered a target, significantly raising concerns about maritime security in the region.

The announcement came shortly after the United States carried out a new round of military operations against Iranian targets. Tehran condemned the attacks as an act of aggression and described the closure of the Strait as a defensive measure aimed at safeguarding its national interests. Iranian officials stated that the restriction would apply to all forms of maritime traffic, including commercial vessels and oil tankers.

The Strait of Hormuz is regarded as one of the world’s most critical shipping routes, with a substantial portion of global crude oil exports passing through the narrow channel linking the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea. Any prolonged disruption in the area could have serious implications for international trade and energy markets.

The developments prompted an immediate reaction from global markets, with oil prices rising amid fears of supply shortages. Analysts warned that uncertainty surrounding the route could increase transportation costs and place additional pressure on economies already grappling with volatile energy prices.

Meanwhile, the international community has called for restraint from both sides to prevent the crisis from spiralling into a broader regional conflict. Several governments have urged diplomatic engagement to de-escalate tensions and ensure the safety of commercial shipping.

The United States has maintained that its military actions were carried out in response to security concerns, while rejecting some of Iran’s claims regarding the extent of the confrontation. As the situation continues to evolve, attention remains focused on whether diplomatic efforts can prevent further escalation and restore stability to one of the world’s most strategically significant waterways.
