Kharagpur Division Observes “World Heritage Day-2026” with Enthusiasm and Public Participation

Kharagpur Division of South Eastern Railway observed World Heritage Day on 18th April’ 2026 with great enthusiasm and active participation from Railway employees, school children and hospital staff. The celebration was organized in line with this year’s global theme: “Emergency Response for Living Heritage in the Context of Conflicts and Disasters.” The objective of observing World Heritage Day was to create awareness about the importance of preserving historical monuments, cultural assets and heritage structures, while also emphasizing the need to protect them during natural calamities, emergencies and unforeseen disasters.

On this occasion, a series of awareness and outreach programmes were conducted across various locations in the division, including schools, railway offices, hospitals and colonies. Posters, banners and informative displays highlighting the significance of heritage conservation were prominently exhibited near heritage structures and other strategic locations. To encourage young minds, drawing competitions, essay writing programmes, quiz contests and question-answer sessions were organized in schools. School children enthusiastically participated and expressed their ideas on preserving monuments, culture and the environment. As part of the observance, heritage buildings and monuments located within Kharagpur Division were given necessary cleaning, touch-ups, beautification and minor maintenance works to improve their appearance and ensure their long-term preservation. Cleanliness drives were also undertaken around such locations.
Kharagpur Division remains committed to preserving its valuable heritage assets and promoting awareness among all sections of society. The observance of World Heritage Day served as an important reminder that heritage conservation is a shared responsibility and an essential part of sustainable development.
