Pakistan Denies Reports of Sheltering Iranian Aircraft at Nur Khan Airbase During US-Iran Tensions

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/12th May 2026

Pakistan has rejected reports claiming that it allowed Iran to station military aircraft at the strategically important PAF Base Nur Khan to protect them from possible American strikes during recent regional tensions involving the United States and Iran. The controversy emerged after international media reports alleged that Iranian military aircraft had been moved to Pakistan during the height of the conflict escalation in West Asia. According to the reports, the aircraft were temporarily relocated to Nur Khan Airbase near Rawalpindi as a precautionary measure against potential attacks by the United States or Israel.

Among the aircraft reportedly shifted was an Iranian RC-130 reconnaissance aircraft, a surveillance and intelligence-gathering platform used by the Iranian Air Force. Reports also suggested that Iran may have transferred some civilian aviation assets to neighbouring countries, including Afghanistan, as part of broader contingency arrangements during the crisis.

The claims quickly triggered diplomatic debate and drew attention in Washington, where some political observers questioned Pakistan’s role during the conflict. The reports appeared significant because Islamabad had publicly projected itself as a country encouraging dialogue and de-escalation between Tehran and Washington. Some analysts argued that if the allegations were true, they could complicate Pakistan’s diplomatic balancing strategy in the region.

However, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry strongly denied the accusations and described the reports as “speculative” and “misleading.” In an official statement, the ministry said no Iranian military aircraft had been sheltered at Nur Khan Airbase for protection against foreign strikes.

Pakistani authorities clarified that several Iranian and American aircraft had landed in the country during the period of heightened tensions, but insisted that the flights were connected to diplomatic communication and ceasefire-related engagements rather than military cooperation. Officials stated that aircraft movements were linked to the transportation of diplomats, technical staff and security personnel involved in discussions aimed at reducing tensions in the region.

Islamabad further maintained that the reports were creating unnecessary confusion at a sensitive geopolitical moment and could undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts. Pakistan reiterated that it continued to support peaceful dialogue and regional stability while avoiding direct involvement in conflicts between major powers.

The issue has once again placed attention on Pakistan’s complex foreign policy position in West Asia. The country shares close historical and economic ties with both Iran and the United States and has often attempted to maintain a balanced approach in regional disputes. Political analysts noted that Islamabad faces diplomatic challenges whenever tensions escalate between Tehran and Washington due to its strategic relationships with both sides.

PAF Base Nur Khan remains one of Pakistan’s most strategically important military facilities. Located close to Islamabad and near key military headquarters, the airbase functions as a major transport and refuelling centre for the Pakistan Air Force. Because of its importance, the base frequently attracts international attention during periods of regional instability.

The reports surfaced amid continuing global concern over rising tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States in West Asia. Military movements, airspace activity and diplomatic engagements across neighbouring countries have remained under close international scrutiny following fears of wider regional escalation. Experts believe the controversy could have broader diplomatic implications if the allegations continue to circulate internationally.
