Trump Warns of Firings Amid U.S. Government Shutdown, Promises “Big Plans” Ahead

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has warned of possible job cuts and project cancellations as the federal government shutdown continues, marking the first such disruption since 2019. The standoff, triggered by Congress’ failure to approve a funding bill, has forced the suspension of non-essential services and the closure of historic sites such as the Liberty Bell and Pearl Harbor.

In a television interview, Trump blamed Democrats for the deadlock, citing a White House budget memo that outlined the potential for long-term staff reductions. “There could be firings,” he said, adding that several “favorite projects” approved under earlier administrations may be scrapped if the funding crisis drags on.

The shutdown has already impacted hundreds of thousands of federal workers, with reports suggesting that up to 750,000 employees could face furloughs or disrupted pay if negotiations remain stalled. White House aides indicated that infrastructure projects, particularly in Democratic-leaning districts, may be at risk of cuts.

Trump defended the fiscal hard line, pointing to his proposed new tariffs on foreign imports, which he claimed could generate nearly $1 trillion annually to ease the government’s financial strain. He also warned that U.S. debt could soar to $38 trillion if unchecked federal spending continues.

Beyond economic concerns, Trump hinted at political maneuvers, saying he had “big plans” for 2026 without elaborating further. He also attacked Democrats for what he described as “dangerous rhetoric,” recalling previous assassination attempts and accusing opponents of incitement.

The shutdown highlights the deep partisan divide in Washington, with both sides holding firm. As negotiations remain deadlocked, analysts warn of mounting economic disruption, delayed public services, and growing uncertainty for millions of Americans reliant on government programs.
