Why Some Naps Leave You Feeling Worse: Doctor Explains the Science Behind Post-Nap Grogginess

While naps are often considered an effective way to recharge during the day, sleep experts say they can sometimes have the opposite effect, leaving people feeling tired, disoriented and less alert after waking up.
According to medical professionals, the phenomenon is largely caused by a condition known as sleep inertia, a temporary state of grogginess that occurs when a person wakes up from deeper stages of sleep. Maryland-based physician Dr. Harneet Sood explained that the duration and timing of a nap play a crucial role in determining whether a person wakes up refreshed or fatigued. If an individual wakes up while in deep sleep, the body may struggle to transition immediately into a fully alert state. As a result, people can experience sluggishness, difficulty concentrating and a lingering sense of exhaustion despite having rested.
Doctors note that naps lasting between 30 and 60 minutes are more likely to result in post-nap grogginess because they often coincide with deeper sleep phases. In contrast, shorter naps of around 10 to 20 minutes generally allow individuals to rest without entering deep sleep, making it easier to wake up feeling energized.
Sleep specialists also emphasize the importance of timing. Early afternoon is considered the ideal period for napping, as it aligns with the body’s natural dip in energy levels. Naps taken too late in the day may interfere with nighttime sleep and contribute to fatigue.
Experts warn that regularly feeling exhausted after naps could indicate underlying sleep-related problems, including poor sleep quality, chronic sleep deprivation or sleep disorders. They advise individuals experiencing persistent fatigue to seek medical guidance. While naps can improve focus, memory and productivity, doctors stress that their benefits depend on proper timing and duration. A carefully planned nap can boost energy levels, whereas a poorly timed one may leave a person feeling more tired than before.
