Trump Praises PM Modi, Expresses Confidence in Early India-US Trade Deal

US President Donald Trump has voiced optimism about the prospects of a trade agreement between the United States and India, saying that negotiations are progressing well despite recent tensions over proposed tariffs on Indian imports.
Speaking to reporters, Trump described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “good friend” and expressed confidence that Washington and New Delhi would soon reach a mutually beneficial trade arrangement. His remarks come at a time when both countries are engaged in intensive discussions aimed at finalising a long-awaited trade pact.
The US President indicated that economic ties between the two nations remain strong and suggested that ongoing negotiations are moving in a positive direction. Trump also highlighted what he described as improving trade dynamics between the two countries, arguing that the United States is now benefiting more from its commercial relationship with India.
The comments assume significance as the Trump administration recently proposed an additional tariff of up to 12.5% on imports from India and several other countries. The measure is linked to concerns over the enforcement of restrictions on goods allegedly produced through forced labour. The proposal has generated uncertainty among businesses and policymakers on both sides.
Despite the tariff issue, officials from both countries have continued negotiations and reiterated their commitment to completing a trade agreement. Recent discussions between trade representatives reportedly covered market access, customs procedures, non-tariff barriers and broader economic cooperation. Both sides have indicated that talks are nearing their final stages.
Trump’s latest remarks are being viewed as a signal that the tariff dispute is unlikely to derail broader efforts to strengthen economic relations. Observers say a successful trade deal could further deepen strategic and commercial ties between India and the United States, two of the world’s largest economies.
