The Centre Disbands The MDMA Team Established To Look Into The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case

In May, a directive was issued to dissolve the MDMA, an agency of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The Multi-Disciplinary Monitoring Agency (MDMA), which was established roughly 24 years ago to look into the bigger plot behind the killing of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, has been shut down by the central government.

In May, a directive was issued to dissolve the MDMA, an agency of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

On the proposal of the M.C. Jain Commission, the MDMA was founded in 1998 for a two-year term in order to look into the larger conspiracy behind the murder committed by an LTTE suicide bomber at a gathering in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, on May 21, 1991.

But it was getting yearly extensions. Over a period of time, the unit issued roughly twenty Letters Rogatory in search of information to a number of nations, including Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom. Most of the letters had responses by this point. There were, however, no noteworthy inputs.

The CBI would pursue the outstanding Letters Rogatory since the MDMA has since been terminated.

The release of the seven defendants in the case would be decided by the state government when the MDMA delivered its report on its findings, according to C.Ve. Shanmugam, the former law minister for Tamil Nadu, who made that statement in March 2020.

In August 2020, the Madras High Court inquired about the agency’s condition while hearing a habeas corpus case submitted by A.G. Perarivalan, the mother of one of the prisoners, asking for a 90-day medical vacation. The court was then notified by the Public Prosecutor that the MDMA was still being investigated.

The Supreme Court used its extraordinary authority to order the release of Perarivalan in May of this year. The Supreme Court granted him bail in March after he spent more than 30 years behind bars. His death sentence for murder had earlier been reduced to life in prison in 2014. He had been cleared of the terrorism-related allegations.
