Trump Accuses Iran of Attacking Indian Ships, Tehran Rejects Allegations as ‘Baseless’

A fresh diplomatic row has emerged in the Middle East after US President Donald Trump accused Iran of carrying out a drone attack on Indian-linked vessels departing the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran, however, has strongly denied the allegations, describing them as “baseless” and politically motivated.

In a statement posted on his social media platform, Trump condemned what he described as a “totally unacceptable” attempt by Iran to target Indian ships navigating one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes. He also criticised Iranian officials over what he claimed were misleading narratives surrounding ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing regional tensions.

The accusations come at a time of heightened instability in the Gulf region, where commercial shipping has increasingly found itself caught in the crossfire of wider geopolitical disputes. The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway linking the Persian Gulf to global markets, remains crucial for international energy supplies and trade flows.

Iran swiftly dismissed Trump’s claims. Iranian officials rejected suggestions that the country had orchestrated attacks against Indian vessels, maintaining that the accusations lacked evidence and were intended to undermine diplomatic engagement. According to Tehran, such allegations only complicate already fragile efforts to restore regional stability.

The controversy follows a series of maritime incidents involving vessels with Indian crew members operating near the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz. Recent attacks in the region have heightened concerns in New Delhi, particularly after Indian nationals were among those affected in previous episodes of violence at sea. India has consistently called for restraint and emphasised the importance of safeguarding the security of international shipping lanes.

As tensions persist, the safety of commercial vessels traversing the Strait of Hormuz remains a matter of global concern. The developments underscore the broader risks posed by regional rivalries, where even unverified accusations can have significant diplomatic and economic consequences for countries far beyond the immediate conflict zone.
