Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms Likely to Lash Kolkata and Nearby Districts Over Next Seven Days

Kolkata and several districts of South Bengal are expected to witness widespread rainfall and thunderstorms over the next seven days as monsoon activity intensifies across the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places, attributing the weather to a cyclonic circulation over the north Bay of Bengal that is likely to develop into a low-pressure area.
According to weather officials, intermittent spells of rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds are likely to continue throughout the week. The intensity of rainfall is expected to increase during the weekend, with Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Nadia, East Midnapore and West Midnapore among the districts likely to be affected.
The IMD has warned that heavy showers could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas, traffic congestion and disruption of normal life, particularly in urban centres such as Kolkata. Residents have been advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall. Motorists have also been urged to drive carefully as reduced visibility and waterlogged roads may affect traffic movement.
Meteorologists said the developing weather system over the Bay of Bengal is expected to strengthen monsoon conditions across South Bengal, resulting in sustained rainfall over the coming days. The increased cloud cover is also likely to keep daytime temperatures close to or slightly below normal, providing relief from the prevailing humid conditions.
The forecast comes after Kolkata recorded above-normal rainfall during June, with several spells of heavy showers contributing to one of the city’s wettest starts to the monsoon in recent years. Authorities are closely monitoring the evolving weather situation and have asked local administrations to remain prepared for possible flooding in vulnerable areas.
Fishermen have also been advised not to venture into the sea if weather conditions deteriorate, while disaster management teams remain on alert. Officials said they will continue to monitor the progress of the low-pressure system and issue further advisories if required as the active monsoon phase continues across the state.
