Asteroids2029 Initiative Aims to Strengthen Global Awareness of Planetary Defence Ahead of Apophis Flyby

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 4th July 2026

A global outreach campaign, Asteroids2029, has been launched to raise awareness about asteroid science and planetary defence ahead of the historic close flyby of asteroid 99942 Apophis in 2029. The initiative seeks to use the rare celestial event as an opportunity to educate people about near-Earth objects, encourage international collaboration and promote preparedness against potential asteroid threats.

Scheduled for April 13, 2029, Apophis will make one of the closest recorded approaches of a large asteroid to Earth, passing at a distance of about 32,000 kilometres. Although the asteroid will come closer than many geostationary satellites, scientists have confirmed that it poses no risk of colliding with Earth during the flyby. The event is expected to be visible from several parts of the world, offering billions of people a rare chance to observe a significant astronomical phenomenon.

The Asteroids2029 initiative is designed to bring together scientists, educators, policymakers, space agencies and the public to improve understanding of asteroid detection, tracking and planetary defence strategies. Through educational programmes, public outreach campaigns and scientific activities, organisers hope to inspire greater interest in space science while strengthening global cooperation in monitoring near-Earth objects.

The campaign also supports the United Nations’ International Year of Asteroid Awareness and Planetary Defence in 2029, which aims to highlight the importance of coordinated international efforts to identify and respond to potential asteroid hazards. Experts believe the Apophis flyby presents a unique opportunity to test observation techniques, refine scientific models and engage communities in discussions about planetary protection.

Researchers say advances in asteroid monitoring and early-warning systems have significantly improved humanity’s ability to detect potential threats well in advance. By combining scientific research with public engagement, the Asteroids2029 initiative hopes to enhance preparedness for future asteroid encounters while encouraging wider participation in astronomy and space exploration.

Organisers believe the campaign will leave a lasting legacy by increasing public understanding of planetary defence and reinforcing the importance of global cooperation in safeguarding Earth from potential space-related risks.
