Hasina Vows Political Comeback from India, Bangladesh Erupts in Fresh Unrest

New Delhi/Dhaka: Ousted former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reignited political tensions by declaring that she will return to Bangladesh in December 2026, despite facing a death sentence in absentia for crimes against humanity linked to the 2024 crackdown on anti-government protests. Speaking during a virtual media interaction from New Delhi, Hasina said she was prepared to face imprisonment or even execution but insisted she would return to “stand with the people of Bangladesh.” She also demanded the lifting of the ban on her Awami League party and described the legal proceedings against her as politically motivated.

The remarks triggered sharp condemnation from the Bangladeshi government, which termed the New Delhi event an affront to the country’s sovereignty. Protesters took to the streets in several parts of Bangladesh, with demonstrations intensifying in Dhaka and other cities. Amid the unrest, the residence of former Bangladesh cricket captain and ex-MP Shakib Al Hasan, an Awami League politician who reportedly appeared virtually during the event, was attacked with petrol bombs, further highlighting the volatile political climate.

Hasina has been living in India since being ousted during the student-led uprising in 2024. Bangladesh has repeatedly sought her extradition, while India has maintained that her public appearances are private engagements. Analysts say her latest declaration could further strain diplomatic ties between New Delhi and Dhaka and deepen political polarisation within Bangladesh.
