Britain to Provide Limited Military Support to Saudi Arabia Amid Houthi Attacks

Britain has agreed to provide limited military support to Saudi Arabia following an increase in attacks by Iran-backed Houthi forces, with Riyadh seeking assistance as tensions escalate across West Asia. The British government will deploy a Voyager aircraft to provide air-to-air refuelling support as part of the arrangement in the coming days.

The decision follows a request from Saudi Arabia after the Houthis intensified attacks on the kingdom. The Iran-backed group controls large parts of Yemen and has increasingly targeted Saudi territory amid the wider regional conflict. The latest developments have opened another front in a war that began with US and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February, according to the report.

Britain and Saudi Arabia have maintained close military ties for several decades. The UK is among Saudi Arabia’s major defence suppliers and has provided military equipment and assistance to the kingdom as part of their longstanding security relationship. The deployment of the Voyager aircraft is intended to support Saudi Arabia’s defensive capabilities. Air-to-air refuelling allows fighter aircraft to remain airborne for longer periods and can extend their operational range. The British support is being described as limited and time-bound rather than an open-ended military commitment.

Earlier this year, Britain also deployed its Sky Sabre air-defence system to Saudi Arabia. The system was intended to help protect the kingdom from missile threats originating from Iran during the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said the latest arrangement would remain limited in duration and would be kept under review. He said Britain was contributing to efforts in West Asia while also supporting measures aimed at keeping the Strait of Hormuz open.

The Strait of Hormuz is a major international shipping route and one of the world’s most important passages for oil and gas shipments. Any disruption in the waterway could have consequences for regional trade and global energy markets, making maritime security a significant concern for countries involved in the region.

The latest British move comes as Saudi Arabia faces increasing security challenges linked to the conflict in Yemen. In recent days, Saudi authorities have reported attempts by Houthi forces to target locations inside the kingdom with missiles and drones. Saudi-led forces have said several of these attacks were intercepted. The Houthis have also claimed attacks against targets in Saudi Arabia, including areas linked to the country’s energy infrastructure. Some of these claims have not been independently verified.
