A helicopter collision near Mount Everest in Nepal’s Solukhumbu district on Tuesday morning left one person dead and three others injured, raising fresh concerns about aviation safety in the popular Himalayan trekking region. The accident involved two helicopters operated by private aviation companies and occurred near Pheriche village, an important stop along the route to Everest Base Camp.

According to preliminary reports, the incident took place at approximately 8.15 am local time when the two aircraft approached a landing area from different directions. The helicopters, operated by Fishtail Air and Air Dynasty, reportedly attempted to land at the same location, resulting in a collision.

The deceased was identified as 47-year-old Indian national Vasanth Kumar Balaramudu. Three other people sustained injuries in the accident. Those injured included a New Zealand resident of Indian origin and two Nepali pilots who were operating the aircraft. They were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

Initial information suggested that snow covering some of the helipads in the region might have contributed to the circumstances surrounding the accident. The weather and landing conditions in the high-altitude area were also being examined. However, authorities had not established the precise cause of the collision, and the circumstances remained under investigation.

The accident has drawn attention to the challenges associated with helicopter operations in the Everest region, where aircraft regularly transport tourists, mountaineers, trekking groups and essential supplies. Helicopter services are widely used in the area because of its difficult terrain, limited road connectivity and the time required to reach remote settlements on foot.

Pheriche, located along the trekking route to Everest Base Camp, is a significant stop for climbers and trekkers travelling towards the world’s highest mountain. Helicopters frequently operate in the surrounding region to provide transportation and emergency evacuation services, particularly for visitors experiencing altitude-related health problems.

The latest incident has renewed concerns about the risks associated with helicopter landings in the Himalayan mountains. High altitude, unpredictable weather, limited landing space and changing visibility can make aviation operations particularly challenging in the region. Snow accumulation on landing areas can further complicate manoeuvres and reduce the availability of suitable landing spots.

Nepal’s aviation sector has experienced several accidents involving helicopters and other aircraft over the years, prompting repeated calls for stronger safety measures and improved monitoring of flight operations. Authorities are expected to examine the flight details, landing procedures and weather conditions surrounding Tuesday’s collision to establish how the two helicopters came into contact. Meanwhile, the incident has once again highlighted the importance of aviation safety in Nepal’s Himalayan region, particularly as the country continues to attract international tourists and mountaineers to Mount Everest.
