Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) launched its first Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV), named Sanghmitra, in Kolkata on May 20, 2026, marking a major milestone in India’s naval shipbuilding programme.
The warship was launched by Smt. Sarita Vatsayan, wife of Sanjay Vatsayan, who attended the ceremony as Chief Guest. GRSE is building four NGOPVs for the Indian Navy.
The 113-metre-long vessel, with a displacement of 3,000 tons, will have enhanced endurance, surveillance capability, and firepower. Designed for coastal and deep-sea operations, the NGOPVs will undertake maritime security, anti-piracy, search-and-rescue, humanitarian relief, and special operations missions.
Vice Admiral Vatsayan praised GRSE’s contribution to strengthening India’s maritime capabilities, while GRSE CMD Cmde P.R. Hari highlighted the shipyard’s technological progress and upcoming launches. The launch follows GRSE’s successful delivery of eight ships in the previous financial year, reinforcing its role in India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat defence initiative.
