Lieutenant Commander Harshul Bhat of the Indian Navy has emerged as a symbol of courage and leadership after successfully leading a high-risk anti-piracy operation that resulted in the surrender of 35 Somali pirates and the rescue of 17 hostages.
The operation, conducted in March 2024, involved the hijacked merchant vessel MV Ruen, a Malta-flagged cargo ship that had been under the control of Somali pirates since December 2023. The vessel was reportedly being used as a base for carrying out further acts of piracy in the Arabian Sea and surrounding waters.
Serving aboard INS Kolkata, Lieutenant Commander Bhat commanded a 14-member team of MARCOS, the Indian Navy’s elite Marine Commandos. After locating the hijacked ship near the Somali coast, Indian naval forces launched a carefully planned intervention. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the commandos boarded the vessel and secured critical areas while ensuring the safety of the hostages on board.
The operation lasted nearly 40 hours and involved intense negotiations, tactical manoeuvres, and sustained pressure on the pirates. The commandos successfully prevented any harm to the hostages and forced the armed pirates to surrender without causing casualties among the rescued crew or Indian personnel.
Following the surrender, naval teams conducted a comprehensive search of the vessel and recovered a cache of weapons, ammunition, and other equipment used by the pirates. The successful mission marked one of the most significant anti-piracy operations undertaken by the Indian Navy in recent years.
Lieutenant Commander Bhat, who hails from Jammu and was commissioned into the Navy in 2018, was later awarded the Nau Sena Medal (Gallantry) in recognition of his exceptional bravery, leadership, and operational excellence.
