Major Rakesh T R of the Indian Army’s elite 9 Para Special Forces has been recognised for his exceptional bravery and tactical leadership in thwarting a potential terrorist attack during a high-profile visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Jammu in 2022.
Hailing from Tumakuru district in Karnataka, Major Rakesh comes from a modest agricultural background. His early life was shaped by discipline and determination, eventually leading him to pursue a career in the armed forces. Inspired by national security challenges, including the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, he joined the Indian Army after clearing the rigorous selection process in 2016.
Soon after his commissioning, he volunteered for the Para Special Forces, one of the most demanding and elite units of the Army. Following intensive training, he was inducted into the 9 PARA (SF), a unit known for executing high-risk counter-terrorism operations in sensitive regions.
The defining moment in his career came on April 24, 2022, when intelligence agencies flagged a possible fidayeen attack ahead of a public rally to be addressed by the Prime Minister in Jammu. At the time, then Captain Rakesh T R was serving as an Alert Troop Commander, responsible for rapid response in case of emerging threats.
As the situation unfolded, reports of terrorist movement near the rally site triggered immediate action. Rakesh and his team were deployed to neutralise the threat. Demonstrating sharp tactical awareness, he utilised a quadcopter drone to conduct aerial surveillance, which helped pinpoint the exact location of the attackers in a densely populated area.
The operation quickly escalated when the terrorists attempted to break the security cordon, opening fire and creating panic. In the face of imminent danger, Rakesh advanced under heavy gunfire, coordinating his team while ensuring minimal risk to civilians. His decisive leadership and controlled response played a crucial role in containing the situation.
Engaging the militants at close quarters, he successfully neutralised one of the attackers, effectively preventing them from advancing toward the rally venue. His swift intervention not only safeguarded the Prime Minister’s convoy but also averted a potentially large-scale tragedy involving civilians and security personnel.
For his courage and exemplary service, he was awarded the Shaurya Chakra, India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry honour. The award citation praised his exceptional composure, operational acumen, and bravery under fire during the mission.
Since then, he has been promoted to the rank of Major and continues to serve in the Special Forces. Details of his current assignments remain undisclosed, in keeping with the confidential nature of such operations.
Major Rakesh T R’s journey from a rural background to becoming a decorated Special Forces officer reflects dedication, resilience, and a strong sense of duty. His actions during the Jammu operation underscore the critical role played by India’s elite forces in maintaining national security and countering terrorism.
The incident stands as a reminder of the constant threats faced by security agencies and the bravery required to neutralise them. Major Rakesh’s conduct during the operation not only ensured the safety of a high-profile event but also reinforced the Indian Army’s commitment to protecting the nation against evolving security challenges.
