News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 15th May 2026

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has backed Sanju Samson as a future captain of India’s T20I side, saying the wicketkeeper-batter has developed into a strong leadership candidate through his performances and maturity in recent years.

Speaking about India’s evolving white-ball setup, Shastri said Samson has built a “clear case for leadership” because of the calmness and confidence he has displayed both as a player and as captain of Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League. According to the former coach, Samson’s growth in decision-making, tactical awareness and handling of pressure situations makes him a serious option for India’s T20 future.

Shastri praised Samson’s ability to remain composed during difficult situations and noted that modern T20 cricket requires captains who can think quickly while also managing players effectively. He added that Samson has shown the ability to maintain a positive atmosphere within the team and support younger players, qualities considered important in contemporary leadership roles.

The former India coach also highlighted Samson’s consistency and maturity over the last few seasons. Once viewed mainly as a talented but inconsistent batter, Samson has gradually transformed into a more dependable performer in both franchise and international cricket. His leadership with Rajasthan Royals has particularly earned praise from former players and analysts.

Discussions surrounding India’s future T20 captaincy have intensified following the retirement of several senior players from the format. With the Indian team management focusing on building a younger squad ahead of future ICC tournaments, leadership options among emerging players are being closely examined.

Samson’s performances in recent IPL seasons have strengthened his reputation as a tactically aware captain capable of handling pressure in high-intensity matches. Cricket experts have frequently praised his composed approach, flexible thinking and trust in younger teammates.

Although there has been no official indication from the Indian cricket board regarding a leadership change, Shastri’s endorsement has added momentum to conversations about Samson’s long-term role in India’s T20 setup. Many observers now believe the Kerala batter could become an important part of India’s leadership plans in the coming years.
