Born as Prabodh Chandra Dey on 1 May 1919 in Kolkata, Manna Dey remains one of the most versatile and respected playback singers in Indian music history. With a career spanning several decades, he recorded over 3,000 songs in multiple languages, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations.
Manna Dey’s musical journey was deeply rooted in classical traditions. Trained under his uncle, the legendary musician Krishna Chandra Dey, he mastered the intricacies of Hindustani classical music. What set him apart was his rare ability to blend classical depth with popular appeal, making even complex compositions accessible to a wider audience.
His repertoire included a remarkable range of songs—from classical-based masterpieces like “Laga Chunari Mein Daag” to light-hearted hits such as “Ek Chatur Naar.” He collaborated with some of the greatest composers and lent his voice to iconic actors, becoming a vital part of India’s golden era of cinema music.
Throughout his illustrious career, Manna Dey received numerous accolades. He was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1971, followed by the Padma Bhushan in 2005, recognising his immense contribution to Indian music. In 2007, he was bestowed with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest honour in Indian cinema.
Manna Dey passed away on 24 October 2013 in Bengaluru, but his voice continues to resonate through time. His dedication, technical brilliance, and emotional depth have secured him an eternal place in the hearts of music lovers.
