Ritabrata Banerjee Emerges as Key Face of TMC Rebellion

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 4th June 2026

Former student leader and first-time MLA Ritabrata Banerjee has emerged as one of the most prominent faces of the growing rebellion within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), posing a significant challenge to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s authority at a time when the party is grappling with internal turmoil.

Once considered a rising star within the TMC, Ritabrata was reportedly viewed as a potential ministerial candidate had the party retained power comfortably. However, political equations changed dramatically after he was expelled from the party over allegations of anti-party activities. Since then, he has positioned himself at the forefront of a dissident group that has openly questioned the leadership’s decisions.

Ritabrata’s political journey began in the ranks of the CPI(M), where he gained prominence through student politics and organisational work. His transition to the TMC brought with it a reputation for speaking his mind and challenging established authority. Political observers note that this willingness to confront senior leadership has remained a defining feature of his career.

The current crisis within the TMC has elevated Ritabrata’s role considerably. According to reports, a large section of legislators unhappy with the party leadership rallied behind him, seeing him as a figure capable of articulating their concerns. The rebel camp claimed the support of a substantial number of MLAs and moved to project Ritabrata as its leader in the Assembly, in direct opposition to the leadership-backed nominee.

The development has intensified concerns within the ruling party, exposing fault lines that had remained largely hidden in recent years. Analysts believe the rebellion is particularly damaging because it originates from within the party’s own ranks rather than from external political opponents.

For Mamata Banerjee, the challenge extends beyond managing dissent. The episode has raised questions about organisational cohesion and the ability of the party leadership to maintain discipline amid growing dissatisfaction among elected representatives.

As political uncertainty continues, Ritabrata Banerjee’s rise from a former Left activist to the leading face of a major internal revolt has become one of the most closely watched developments in West Bengal politics. His actions and the response from the TMC leadership are expected to shape the state’s political landscape in the months ahead.
