The makers of Batwara 1947, the much-anticipated period drama produced by Aamir Khan, unveiled the film’s first motion poster on Tuesday, offering audiences a glimpse into Sunny Deol’s intense new avatar against the backdrop of India’s Partition.
The film, previously titled Lahore 1947, is directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and is scheduled to hit theatres on August 14, 2026, coinciding with the eve of India’s Independence Day. The motion poster presents Deol in a protective and determined role, holding a torch as he shields his family amid the chaos and violence associated with the Partition era. The accompanying tagline reads: “In times of hatred and fear, he chose courage.”
The imagery has drawn comparisons with Deol’s iconic “hand pump” sequence from the Gadar franchise, a symbol that has become synonymous with the actor’s larger-than-life screen presence. While Gadar portrayed cross-border tensions through a fictional love story, Batwara 1947 appears to focus on the human cost of Partition and the resilience of ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances.
The film marks the return of Preity Zinta to the big screen after a prolonged hiatus. She reunites with Sunny Deol after their previous collaborations in Farz and The Hero: Love Story of a Spy. The ensemble cast also includes Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal and Karan Deol in pivotal roles.
Reports suggest that the makers opted to rename the project from Lahore 1947 to Batwara 1947 to better reflect the emotional and historical themes central to the narrative. The title rights were reportedly acquired after discussions with the family of late producer Salim Akhtar, associated with the 1989 film Batwara.
