A new survey has revealed that a large majority of Indian students are turning to artificial intelligence tools for emotional support. Conducted in June 2025 by Youth Ki Awaaz and YLAC, the survey titled “Are You There, AI?” gathered responses from 506 young people aged between 13 and 35.

Findings showed that 88% of students use AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Character.AI when stressed or lonely, with ChatGPT emerging as the most widely used tool. Interestingly, the study highlighted a gender gap—52% of young women reported confiding in AI tools, compared to a much lower share among men.

The reliance on AI was also stronger among smaller towns, where 43% of young adults said they turned to such platforms for companionship, compared to lower figures in big cities.

However, the increasing use of AI for personal interaction comes with concerns. About 67% of respondents feared that excessive use of AI could deepen social isolation, while 58% worried about privacy risks.

Researchers noted that while AI is not replacing human relationships, it is filling an emotional void, offering many young Indians a safe, judgment-free outlet to express themselves.
