Veteran Telugu actor Jagapathi Babu has come out in support of Janhvi Kapoor amid the controversy surrounding her portrayal in the recently released film Peddi. The actor appealed to audiences not to direct personal criticism towards performers for creative decisions made during the filmmaking process.
The debate erupted after sections of viewers raised concerns over certain scenes featuring Janhvi Kapoor’s character, alleging that they objectified women and relied on outdated cinematic tropes. Social media platforms witnessed intense discussions, with some users criticising the portrayal of the female lead in the Ram Charan-starrer.
Addressing the backlash, Jagapathi Babu defended his co-star, stating that actors generally perform according to the vision and instructions of the director. He remarked that Janhvi Kapoor had merely carried out what had been asked of her as part of her professional responsibility and should not be subjected to online abuse or personal attacks. He also urged critics to avoid causing emotional distress to artistes through trolling.
The controversy had earlier prompted director Buchi Babu Sana to issue a public statement acknowledging the concerns raised by audiences. The filmmaker clarified that it had never been his intention to disrespect or objectify women through the narrative. He assured viewers that the feedback had been taken seriously and confirmed that changes would be made to the scenes that had attracted criticism.
