Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs Kalyan Banerjee and Kirti Azad on Tuesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of encouraging an atmosphere of political hostility, alleging that recent attacks on party leaders were part of a broader pattern of intimidation against opposition voices.
Addressing a press conference in the national capital, the two leaders condemned the incidents and called for a fair and impartial investigation to identify those responsible. They argued that attempts were being made to portray the attacks as spontaneous expressions of public dissatisfaction, while overlooking what they described as a more serious threat to democratic functioning.
Kirti Azad said political disagreements should be resolved through dialogue and electoral processes rather than violence. He stressed that any attack on public representatives, irrespective of party affiliation, weakens democratic institutions and undermines the principles of political engagement. According to him, accountability must be ensured to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
Kalyan Banerjee criticised what he termed the selective response of BJP leaders and sections of the media to acts of violence involving opposition politicians. He contended that the safety of elected representatives should be a matter of collective concern and not viewed through a partisan lens. Banerjee further alleged that a narrative was being built to justify aggression against political opponents.
The TMC leaders dismissed suggestions that the incidents reflected widespread public anger against their party. Instead, they claimed that organised efforts were being undertaken to create fear among opposition ranks and discourage dissent.
The remarks come amid escalating political tensions between the TMC and the BJP, with both parties increasingly trading accusations over governance, law and order, and the state of democratic institutions. The latest controversy is expected to further intensify the ongoing political confrontation between the two rivals.
