India Blocks Release of Oscar‑Nominated Film The Voice of Hind Rajab Citing Diplomatic Concerns

India’s Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has refused to certify the Oscar‑nominated docudrama The Voice of Hind Rajab for theatrical release, citing concerns that screening the film could affect diplomatic ties with Israel. The decision has sparked debate over censorship, artistic freedom, and the influence of foreign policy on cultural policy.

Directed by Kaouther Ben Hania, the Tunisian–French film chronicles the death of Hind Rajab, a five-year-old Palestinian girl killed during the Gaza conflict, using emergency call recordings and dramatized sequences. The film has received widespread acclaim internationally, earning festival awards and an Academy Award nomination. It has already been released in the United States, United Kingdom, and several European countries.

Mumbai-based distributor Jai Viratra Entertainment said CBFC officials expressed concern that releasing the film could harm India–Israel relations, although no formal public statement has been issued. The decision prevents the film from opening in Indian theaters, disrupting its planned mid-March release coinciding with the global awards season.

The move has drawn criticism from political and cultural figures. Senior opposition leader Shashi Tharoor described the decision as “disgraceful,” arguing that it undermines artistic expression and limits public access to globally significant cinema. Filmmakers and free-speech advocates have also criticized the board for placing diplomatic considerations above creative freedom.Supporters of the CBFC’s stance argue that the decision reflects India’s broader foreign policy priorities, balancing historical support for Palestinians with strengthening strategic, economic, and defense ties with Israel under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
