As The World Population Reaches 8 Billion, The Next Billion Will Come From These 8 Nations
Only seven nations—China, India, the US, Indonesia, Pakistan, Nigeria, and Brazil—have more than half of the world’s population.
According to the United Nations, this exceptional rise is caused by the gradual extension of human longevity due to advancements in nutrition, personal cleanliness, public health, and medicine. The eight billion mark was also hailed as a historic turning point for humanity.
The United Nations also emphasized that although population growth experienced a significant spike in the second part of the 20th century, it may now start to drop. As of 2019, the average lifespan across the globe is 72.8 years, an increase of approximately nine years from 1990. According to current estimates, by 2050, the average life expectancy might be 77.2 years, the paper stated, adding that it might take 15 years to achieve the nine-billion-person milestone.
