Veteran Actor Vikram Gokhale Dies

Veteran actor Vikram Gokhale, who starred in movies, television shows, and plays, passed away on 26 November afternoon at a city hospital from multi-organ failure after receiving treatment there for a few weeks, according to hospital officials. Following health issues, Gokhale, 77, was admitted to the Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital earlier this month.
This occurs just one day after the renowned actor’s physicians said he was making modest but steady progress.
Gokhale was a well-known actor who performed in theatre, films, and television, seamlessly switching between Marathi and Hindi.
In addition to acting, the actor was praised for his voice, diction, and stoic dialogue delivery, which the audience saw throughout his five-decade career. However, he recently sparked controversy when he defended Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut’s assertion that India only achieved freedom in 2014 and that what it received in 1947 was alms. Gokhale received criticism for endorsing Ranaut, which was interpreted as endorsing Narendra Modi. Several writers and members of the film industry expressed concern that Gokhale’s comments could signal a shift in the Marathi theatre and film industry from being politically neutral to radical Hindutva.
Gokhale, a master actor, earned the National Award for best actor for his portrayal of a husband watching helplessly as his wife fell into a coma in Anumati. He was last seen in the 2021 Marathi film Godavari.
When his father Chandrakant Gokhale was a prominent actor and vocalist in Marathi cinema, he was born on November 14, 1945. His grandmother, Kamlabhai Gokhale, was the first child actress in Indian cinema.
