Sudarshen Reddy vs CP Radhakrishnan: Oppn announce their vice-presidential pick

News Mania Desk / Piyal Chatterjee / 19th August 2025

Sudarshen Reddy, a former Supreme Court justice, has been declared the opposition’s nominee for the next vice presidential election. He will run against CP Radhakrishnan, the NDA’s nominee. As both sides mobilize support before the election on September 9, it is anticipated that the election will set the stage for a fierce political battle.

Mallikarjun Kharge, the leader of the Congress, made the statement on Tuesday. Radhakrishnan, a seasoned BJP leader, is 67 years old and was named the ruling NDA’s V-P choice last week. He is from Tamil Nadu and is currently the governor of Maharashtra.

Despite signs from the opposition INDIA group that it will put up its own candidate and create a contest, Radhakrishnan’s victory is assured because the BJP-led NDA has a landslide majority in the electoral college made up of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs.

Nominations must be submitted by August 21 in order for the new vice president to be elected on September 9. Jagdeep Dhankhar, the incumbent, abruptly resigned on July 21 due to health issues, creating the vacancy.

Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Sarbanand Sonowal, former Karnataka chief minister BS Yedyurappa, BL Santhosh, national general secretary (organization), OBC cell chief K Laxman, Sudha Yadav, Iqbal Singh Lalpura, Satyanarayan Jatiya, and party president JP Nadda are all members of the Parliamentary Board.
