Indian Army officer Major Abhilasha Barak has been honoured with the United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award, earning praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and recognition from the international community for her efforts in advancing gender equality within peacekeeping operations.
The prestigious award acknowledges Major Barak’s work during her deployment with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), where she served as an Engagement Team Commander and Gender Focal Point. Through her role, she helped strengthen the participation of women in peacebuilding initiatives and promoted gender-sensitive approaches in areas affected by conflict.
Congratulating the officer on her achievement, Prime Minister Modi said the honour reflects India’s long-standing commitment to global peacekeeping missions and highlights the dedication of Indian personnel serving under the UN flag. He described the award as a matter of pride for the nation and an inspiration for aspiring women leaders across various fields.
Major Barak played a key role in conducting outreach programmes aimed at supporting women and adolescent girls in local communities. Her initiatives focused on improving engagement between peacekeepers and civilians while encouraging greater inclusion of women in decision-making processes related to peace and security.
The recognition adds another milestone to Major Barak’s distinguished career. She previously made history by becoming the first woman combat helicopter pilot in the Indian Army, breaking barriers in a traditionally male-dominated field and paving the way for greater participation of women in military roles.
The UN Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award is presented annually to military peacekeepers who demonstrate exceptional leadership in promoting the Women, Peace and Security agenda. Major Barak joins a select group of Indian officers who have received the honour, further reinforcing India’s reputation as one of the leading contributors to United Nations peacekeeping operations worldwide.
