India has issued a strong diplomatic protest to the United States following a series of attacks on merchant vessels carrying Indian seafarers in the Gulf region, calling for an immediate end to strikes that put civilian lives at risk.
According to reports, three merchant ships with Indian crew members were targeted within a span of four days amid escalating tensions in West Asian waters. The developments have triggered concern in New Delhi, with the government emphasising that the safety of civilian sailors must remain a priority regardless of ongoing geopolitical conflicts.
The most devastating incident involved the tanker MT Settebello, where three Indian seafarers were killed following an attack attributed to the US Navy. Several other Indian nationals aboard the vessel were later rescued and brought to safety. The deaths of the crew members have intensified calls for accountability and stronger measures to protect commercial shipping routes used by thousands of Indian maritime workers.
Responding to the incidents, the Ministry of External Affairs conveyed India’s concerns directly to Washington. Official sources said India lodged a formal protest and urged the United States to exercise maximum restraint in military operations that could endanger civilian vessels. New Delhi maintained that merchant ships should not become collateral damage in broader strategic confrontations unfolding in the region.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that attacks on commercial vessels carrying innocent crew members are unacceptable and stressed the importance of restoring stability through dialogue and diplomatic engagement. India also reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the interests of Indian nationals working across international waters.
The incidents have highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by Indian seafarers, who form a significant portion of the global maritime workforce. In response, Indian authorities have reportedly directed relevant agencies to remain on high alert and coordinate closely with shipping companies and maritime partners to ensure timely assistance whenever required.
As tensions continue to disrupt one of the world’s busiest shipping corridors, India has underlined that freedom of navigation and the protection of civilian seafarers must remain central to international efforts aimed at maintaining peace and security in the region. New Delhi’s firm message to Washington reflects its growing concern over the safety of its citizens overseas and its expectation that civilian lives be protected even during periods of heightened military activity.
