West Bengal Government Dissolves KMC Board, Appoints Administrator to Run Civic Body

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 12th June 2026

The state government has dissolved the board of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and appointed an administrator to oversee the functioning of the city’s civic body. The decision effectively ends the Trinamool Congress’s direct administrative control over one of the state’s most influential municipal institutions.

The move follows major political changes in the state and comes amid a broader restructuring of civic administration. According to official notifications, the elected board of the KMC has been dissolved, with the Municipal Commissioner being entrusted with the responsibility of managing the corporation’s affairs until a new governing arrangement is put in place.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation plays a crucial role in administering civic services in the state capital. Its responsibilities include maintaining roads, managing sanitation and waste disposal systems, ensuring water supply, overseeing public health programmes and implementing urban development initiatives. The appointment of an administrator is aimed at ensuring that these essential services continue without interruption during the transition period.

The development has triggered sharp political reactions. Supporters of the state government have defended the move as an administrative necessity designed to maintain stability and improve governance. They argue that the appointment of an administrator will help streamline decision-making and ensure continuity in civic operations.

However, the Trinamool Congress has strongly criticised the decision, describing it as politically motivated. Party leaders have alleged that the dissolution of the KMC board is part of a larger effort to weaken the opposition’s institutional influence in West Bengal. The move has added another chapter to the ongoing political contest between the state’s ruling establishment and the TMC.

Political observers believe the decision could have wider implications beyond municipal governance, particularly in shaping public perceptions ahead of future electoral battles. As Kolkata adjusts to the new administrative arrangement, attention will remain focused on how effectively the administrator manages civic responsibilities and whether fresh elections to the corporation are announced in the coming months.
