Ancient DNA Study Rewrites the Story of Ice Age Cave Lions

A groundbreaking DNA study has revealed that cave lions, one of the most formidable predators of the Ice Age, were far more distinct from modern lions than previously believed. The findings, based on genetic material recovered from ancient remains, offer fresh insights into the evolutionary history of the extinct species and challenge long-held assumptions about its origins.

An international team of researchers analyzed the genomes of 12 cave lions that lived between 17,000 and 148,000 years ago across Eurasia and North America. The scientists compared these samples with the genomes of 20 modern lions from Africa and Asia. Remarkably, some of the ancient DNA was extracted from exceptionally preserved frozen cave lion cubs discovered in Siberian permafrost, including a female cub named Sparta, considered one of the best-preserved Ice Age specimens ever found.

The study found that cave lions and modern lions diverged from a common ancestor roughly 1.5 to 1.7 million years ago, making cave lions a separate evolutionary lineage rather than simply larger Ice Age versions of today’s lions. Researchers identified unique genetic traits linked to growth, vision, brain development, and circulation, suggesting that cave lions evolved specialized adaptations to survive in harsh northern environments.

Despite their long separation, the two lion lineages occasionally interbred. Scientists discovered evidence that colder climatic periods expanded the range of cave lions southward, bringing them into contact with populations of modern lions in regions such as Central and Southwest Asia. These encounters left traces of shared ancestry in their genomes.

Researchers say the findings paint a more complex picture of Ice Age ecosystems and demonstrate how climate shifts influenced animal migration and evolution. The study also highlights the power of ancient DNA to uncover forgotten chapters of natural history, revealing that cave lions were not merely extinct relatives of modern lions but a unique species with a long and independent evolutionary journey.
