Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has called for a nationwide people’s movement to protect the environment, stressing that governments alone cannot address the growing ecological challenges facing the country.
Speaking at an environmental awareness programme in Karnataka, Sitharaman urged citizens, community organisations, educational institutions and local bodies to actively participate in conservation efforts. She emphasized that environmental protection should become a collective responsibility and a part of everyday life rather than remaining solely a government initiative. Her remarks highlighted the need for public participation in preserving natural resources, reducing pollution and promoting sustainable living practices.
The minister noted that India’s environmental future depends on the combined efforts of individuals and communities. She called on people to adopt eco-friendly habits, conserve water, protect forests and biodiversity, and support initiatives aimed at maintaining ecological balance. According to her, meaningful progress can be achieved only when environmental stewardship evolves into a mass movement involving citizens from all walks of life.
Sitharaman also highlighted the importance of traditional knowledge and community-led conservation practices. Referring to successful examples of environmental preservation by local communities, she said such initiatives demonstrate how sustainable living can coexist with development. She encouraged people to draw inspiration from indigenous practices that have protected ecosystems for generations.
The minister stressed that environmental conservation is closely linked to the well-being of future generations. She warned that issues such as climate change, pollution, deforestation and the depletion of natural resources require urgent attention and sustained public engagement. Protecting the environment, she said, is not merely an ecological concern but also a social and economic necessity.
Her appeal comes amid increasing national and global focus on sustainability and climate action. By calling for a people-driven environmental movement, Sitharaman underscored the importance of collective action in ensuring a greener, healthier and more sustainable future for the country.
