Apple’s First Foldable iPhone Could Debut This Week: What to Expect

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 9th September 2026

Apple is reportedly preparing to enter the foldable smartphone market with its first-ever foldable iPhone, which could be unveiled at the company’s September 9 launch event. The device is widely rumoured to be called the iPhone Ultra and is expected to be introduced alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series and new Apple Watch models.

The launch would mark a significant expansion of Apple’s smartphone portfolio, as competitors including Samsung and Google have already established a presence in the foldable segment. Although Apple has yet to officially confirm the device, leaks and reports have revealed several possible details about its design and specifications.

The iPhone Ultra is expected to feature a book-style folding design. Reports suggest the device could measure around 4.5mm in thickness when unfolded, potentially making it one of Apple’s slimmest smartphones. It may have a 7.8-inch internal display paired with a 5.5-inch external screen.

The foldable could also feature a redesigned hinge and a display with a significantly reduced crease. Leaked dummy units reportedly show rounded edges and a design that resembles existing foldable smartphones, although Apple could introduce its own styling and engineering changes.

On the hardware front, the device is expected to use Apple’s next-generation A20 Pro chip and could feature a dual-camera setup on the rear. Reports have also suggested that Apple may retain MagSafe wireless charging, allowing users to continue using compatible chargers and magnetic accessories. Earlier leaks had indicated that MagSafe might be removed because of the phone’s slim construction.

Price is expected to be one of the biggest challenges. Current estimates place the foldable iPhone at around $2,000 or more, while some analysts have predicted a price between $2,300 and $2,500. In India, that could translate into a price of roughly Rs 1.9 lakh or higher, although Apple has not announced official pricing.

The phone could reach stores later in 2026, potentially alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models. However, some reports have suggested that shipments could begin as late as December. For now, Apple has not officially confirmed the iPhone Ultra’s name, specifications, price or release date. The September 9 event is expected to provide clarity on the company’s long-awaited entry into the foldable smartphone market.
