BJP Takes Early Lead as Counting Begins in West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026

News Mania Desks/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 4th May 2026

Counting of votes for the high-stakes West Bengal Assembly elections began on Monday morning, with early trends indicating that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken an initial lead over the ruling Mamata Banerjee-led All India Trinamool Congress (TMC).

As per early updates released under the supervision of the Election Commission of India, BJP surged ahead in several constituencies during the counting of postal ballots and the first rounds of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) votes. The early momentum has given the saffron party a crucial edge in what is being viewed as one of the most closely contested elections in the state’s recent history.

The BJP’s early lead has intensified speculation over whether the party can convert its initial advantage into a decisive mandate, challenging the dominance of the TMC, which has governed West Bengal for over a decade under Banerjee’s leadership. However, TMC leaders remain confident, pointing out that rural and later-round votes could shift the balance as counting progresses.

Political observers note that postal ballot trends often favour opposition parties, and the situation could evolve significantly as more rounds are completed. Still, the BJP’s strong showing in early trends underscores its sustained push to expand its footprint in eastern India.

Security has been tightened across counting centres, with multi-layered arrangements in place to ensure a smooth and transparent process. Party workers from both sides have gathered outside centres, closely tracking every update as the results unfold.

With counting expected to continue through the day, all eyes remain on whether the BJP can maintain its lead or if the TMC stages a comeback in the decisive later rounds.
