The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested retired district judge Giribala Singh in connection with the death of Twisha Sharma, a case that has triggered widespread public attention and judicial scrutiny across the country.
The arrest came after the Madhya Pradesh High Court cancelled Singh’s anticipatory bail, citing serious allegations and evidence that required deeper investigation. CBI officials reportedly questioned her for several hours at her residence in Bhopal before taking her into custody. She is expected to be produced before a special court as the investigation progresses.
Twisha Sharma was found dead under suspicious circumstances at her matrimonial home in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area on May 12. Her family alleged that she had been subjected to dowry harassment and cruelty by her husband Samarth Singh and his family members. They further accused the family of attempting to suppress evidence and influence the probe.
The accused, however, have maintained that Twisha died by suicide and denied all allegations made by her relatives.
The matter gained national prominence after the Supreme Court took suo motu cognisance of the case amid concerns over the involvement of influential individuals linked to the judiciary. The apex court later directed the CBI to conduct an independent investigation to ensure fairness and transparency. The court also urged both families and media organisations to avoid speculation during the ongoing probe.
According to reports, the High Court referred to WhatsApp conversations, allegations of sustained harassment and injury marks found on Twisha’s body while cancelling Giribala Singh’s bail. The court also observed that certain injuries noted in the post-mortem examination did not appear to be post-mortem in nature, raising further questions about the circumstances surrounding her death.
Twisha’s husband, advocate Samarth Singh, is already in custody in relation to the case. The Bar Council of India has also suspended him from legal practice pending investigation. Meanwhile, investigators have ordered a second post-mortem examination by a team from AIIMS Delhi after concerns were raised over the initial forensic findings. The CBI continues to examine multiple aspects of the case as public attention remains focused on the developments.
