Colonel Kalyani Deshpande Becomes First Woman to Lead Training Battalion at BEG Centre

In a landmark achievement for the Indian Army, Colonel Kalyani Deshpande has become the first woman officer to command a training battalion at the Bombay Engineer Group (BEG) and Centre in Khadki, Pune. The appointment is being hailed as a significant step forward in the Armed Forces’ efforts to promote greater gender inclusion in leadership roles.

Colonel Deshpande assumed command of the battalion on June 5, marking a historic moment for the prestigious military establishment, which has played a key role in training generations of combat engineers. Her appointment reflects the Army’s growing emphasis on merit-based leadership and expanding opportunities for women officers across different branches of service.

During her tenure at the centre, Colonel Deshpande was closely involved in the training and development of Agniveers inducted into the Bombay Sappers regiment. She oversaw intensive military training programmes designed to equip recruits with the skills, discipline and technical expertise required for modern military operations. Her leadership contributed to maintaining the high standards for which the institution is known.

The Bombay Sappers, one of the Indian Army’s oldest and most distinguished engineering formations, acknowledged her contribution to shaping future soldiers and strengthening the training framework at the centre. Military officials praised her professionalism, commitment and ability to lead from the front in a demanding training environment.
