Correspondent Ajay Chowdhury/6th May 2026

In one of the most talked-about results of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, BJP candidate Kalita Majhi defeated Trinamool Congress candidate Shyama Prasanna Lohar in Ausgram by 12,535 votes. The Ausgram constituency in East Burdwan district is reserved for Scheduled Castes.
Majhi, who worked as a domestic worker earning between Rs 2,500 and Rs 4,000 a month, pulled off a major upset. Her husband, Subrata Majhi, works as a water pipeline mechanic. The couple has a son studying in Class 8.
This marks a sharp reversal from 2021, when Majhi contested the same seat and lost to TMC’s Abhedananda Thander by around 11,000 votes. Her victory this year has drawn attention comparable to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s defeat.
