Ireland scripted one of the biggest upsets in recent international cricket by defeating reigning T20 world champions India in the second T20 International to seal a memorable 2-0 series triumph in Belfast. The dramatic one-run victory marked Ireland’s first-ever bilateral T20I series win over India and highlighted the hosts’ growing stature in the shortest format of the game.
Having already secured a convincing win in the opening match, Ireland entered the second contest with confidence and produced another disciplined performance to complete the historic clean sweep. After electing to bat, the home side recovered from an early wobble to post a competitive total of 154 for 8. Harry Tector anchored the innings with av composed half-century, scoring 53 runs, while Ben Calitz provided valuable support with a crucial 37 that helped Ireland finish strongly.
India’s chase got off to a disastrous start as the visitors slumped to 19 for 3, with Ireland’s pace attack making early inroads. Fast bowlers Jai Moondra and Matt Hollard struck at regular intervals, putting the world champions under immediate pressure and preventing them from building momentum.
Despite the early collapse, Tilak Varma led India’s recovery with a determined knock of 55 runs, keeping the visitors in contention until the closing stages. However, Ireland’s bowlers maintained their composure under pressure, claiming timely wickets to prevent India from taking control of the chase. Needing just a handful of runs in the final over, India fell agonisingly short after Harshit Rana was dismissed on the penultimate delivery, handing Ireland a thrilling one-run victory.
Ireland captain Lorcan Tucker praised his team’s resilience and ability to deliver under pressure, saying the players had demonstrated that their opening-match victory was no coincidence. India skipper Shreyas Iyer admitted that Ireland had outperformed his side in key moments and deserved to win the series.
