French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, are preparing to submit both photographic and scientific documentation in a U.S. defamation lawsuit to disprove persistent online conspiracy theories about the First Lady’s gender.
The couple has launched legal action against American right-wing commentator Candace Owens, who has repeatedly claimed that Brigitte Macron was born male and assumed the identity of her deceased brother. Owens’ lawyers have responded with a motion to dismiss, but the case is moving forward in a Delaware court.Tom Clare, the attorney representing the Macrons, told the BBC’s Fame Under Fire podcast that the allegations have been “incredibly upsetting” for Mrs. Macron and a distraction for the French president. While Emmanuel Macron has continued to carry out his duties, Clare emphasized that the attacks have taken a personal toll. “When your family is under attack, it wears on you. And he’s not immune from that because he’s the president of a country,” Clare said.
To address the conspiracy directly, the Macrons are prepared to produce medical records, family photographs, and expert testimony. According to Clare, this expert input will be “scientific in nature,” though he declined to specify the details at this stage. He stressed that the couple intends to prove “both generically and specifically” that the rumors are false.
For Brigitte Macron, the process will be emotionally difficult, as it involves sharing highly personal information in a public courtroom. Still, Clare said she is determined to endure the discomfort to put an end to the false narrative. “If that unpleasantness and that discomfort… is what it takes to set the record straight and stop this, she’s 100% ready to meet that burden,” he added.
The case highlights how online disinformation can escalate into international legal battles, forcing public figures to go to extraordinary lengths to protect their reputation and privacy.
