Legal Storm Brews for TMC Ahead of 2026 West Bengal Polls

News Mania Desk / 22nd April 2026

The ruling All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal is facing mounting legal and institutional challenges in the run-up to the 2026 Assembly elections, with multiple controversies intensifying political tensions.

A major flashpoint has emerged after the Supreme Court of India reportedly criticized Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over alleged interference in investigations by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), stressing the need for due legal process.

The party is also locked in a confrontation with the Election Commission of India (ECI) over electoral roll revisions, with TMC alleging large-scale voter deletions impacting millions. A related PIL in the Calcutta High Court has raised concerns over an alleged “troublemaker” list targeting party workers.

Further complicating matters, reports suggest political consultancy firm Indian Political Action Committee has paused operations in the state amid legal scrutiny, potentially affecting TMC’s campaign machinery.

Additionally, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation faces a possible contempt plea over tram track issues, while a land rights case ruling against the state has added to governance pressures.

With legal battles unfolding across multiple fronts, the political landscape in West Bengal is set for a high-stakes electoral contest.
